Political chaos continues, with a consistent furling of tension, and a subsequent calm. Yet life goes on, and some fun has even emerged from the mess via the hand slapper/clapper (mue top).
Ranging from 10 to 25 baht depending on size, these colorful plastic devices (my favorite ones are white, red, and blue) have been used to heckle politicians, indicate dissent, and in a huge group, express solidarity. The latter is especially apparent at Government House, where PAD protesters have camped since August, and during protests in front of the British Embassy and other significant venues.
Mue top now symbolizes the anti-government movement, and can be found in a range of merchandise, from t-shirts to earrings. The opposing, pro-government side has put out their own version, the foot clapper, but somehow, that doesn't seem as effective.
